Hydration

As I run longer and longer distances, and especially as I do so in ever warmer weather, keeping hydrated has started to become an issue. So I’ve started looking into possible solutions, and so far I’m leaning towards CamelBak’s Stamina II, which includes not only two water bottles but also space for my iPod, some [...]

10km

Ran my fastest 10km race ever today. Of course, it’s only my second. Funny that I would run two marathons before running two 10k races. Anyway, just barely missed my goal of 7 minute miles, but that’s ok, I was within seconds. Next time.

Clif Bar Pace Team

My fuel of choice while out on a run is an oatmeal raisin walnut Clif Bar. I love a banana before heading out, but carrying one with me for 10-15 miles is not my idea of a good time, although it may serve to amuse others: “Is that a banana in your pocket, or…”
Given my [...]

They’re all long runs

Recently I passed around a draft of a 50 page chapter, a chapter that honestly isn’t quite done yet but is already my longest.
The other day I ran 38 miles for the first time. I was aiming for 40, so I guess that run wasn’t quite done yet, either. Cutting it short was the right [...]

Day of firsts

Today was a day of firsts. To start out, this morning I successfully attempted my first thirty mile run. The weather was great, I kept a decent pace, and I finished strong.
Then, at lunch we tried the new dessert at Olive Garden, some sort of Italian donuts with chocolate sauce for dipping (which I avoided.) [...]

Disappointment

I scheduled my whole day–meals, workout, etc.–around our planned meal at Texas Roadhouse this evening, only to discover they were closed. The rolls have been, and still are, sorely missed.
As for the Super Bowl, I had no real stake in it, so no disappointment there.

Happy New Year

I have a few resolutions for the new year. Time will tell how many I can keep.

swim laps at least twice a week…
…so I can run the Quad Cities Triathlon in a triathlon (Quad Cities is out because there’s a marathon the same day)
eat less fried food
communicate better

Happy Thanksgiving!

Deb and I took the dogs to a nearby state park for the first time. I ran while she walked. It was nice, especially the weather.
With one official marathon behind me, one just around the corner, and a couple unofficial ones under my belt, I’ve started to think about my options for the future. More [...]

Marathon cleaning

Sadly my upcoming trip to Mexico City will preclude my participation in the Des Moines marathon a week from today. It does not, however, keep Deb and I from marathon cleaning and laundry sessions yesterday and today. And it opens up the possibility of maybe running the Disney marathon in January. We’ll see.
In other news: I’ve [...]
